STRESS
How do our thoughts affect our body?
Our thoughts affect every single cell in our body. Our brain
and the immune system communicate with hormones that the brain
regulates. Neurotransmitters and receptors are constantly
sending messages to every single organ in the body.
The autonomic system controls functions, such as gastrointestinal,
vascular, and reproductive activities. It was once thought
that conscious control of autonomic functions was impossible,
but hypnotherapy and biofeedback techniques have shown that
theory to be incorrect and have demonstrated conclusively
that people can learn to control autonomic functions. This
discovery is extremely important with far reaching implications
for the future of holistic and preventive health care.
The autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts: The
Parasympathetic and the Sympathetic. During stress some of
the characteristics of the Sympathetic nervous system are:
tense and constricted involuntary muscles; tight throat; tense
neck and upper back; accelerated heart and pulse rate; shallow
respiration; blood shifting from the hands and feet to the
head and trunk.
The adrenal pumps out cortisol, because it thinks there is
an emergency. It prepares you for intense muscular action.
This is called the fight or flight response which is our bodys
way of handling acute stress by using stored glucose and fat
so our muscles have the energy to move us out of dangers way.
As the anxiety builds, even our immune cells began to react
and the neurotransmitters tell our adrenal glands to produce
cortisol. Since there is nothing to fight against, the cortisol
stays in our system. Some researchers believe that if this
fight-or flight response continues for along time, we can
even set ourselves up for a number of illnesses and even contribute
to diabetes, hypertension and auto-immune diseases. Even our
expressions are indications of stress symptoms such as: cold
feet, clammy hands, and a knot in
the stomach.
We live in an instant culture, from quick microwave meals
to a quick fix pill for a headache. The emphasis has been
placed on technology and drugs. There is constant pressure
in our lives and most people feel the anxiety build inside
from all the overload of daily living in a fast moving society.
Stress has been implicated in an entire list of symptoms,
involving most of the bodys systems. Stress can cause
tension headaches, jaw pain, muscle aches and pains, back
pain, and grinding of teeth. It may be responsible for migraine
headaches, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing, heartburn,
nausea, hives, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, diarrhea, constipation,
and sexual problems.
Research suggest that it may even result in anxiety, moodiness,
depression, forgetfulness, frequent crying, fearfulness, nervous
habits, sleep problems, inability to concentrate, and a wide
range of other behavioral problems.
The Parasympathetic is an automatic compensating system that
helps us regulate our Sympathetic back to a relaxed state
where our bodies can conserve energy. Hypnotherapy takes us
from an anxious state to a very relaxed healthy state where
positive suggestions are given to us.
It is important to feel that your life has meaning and you
have some control over it. You take responsibility for your
thoughts, feelings and choices because this is your life.
If there are things about yourself that you dont like,
you have the power to change it and if it is unchangeable,
you have the power to change the way you handle it. Hypnotherapy
gives you back control in your life. It teaches you to activate
the Parasympathetic system.
A hypnotherapist may teach a client to simply think
a certain word, such as peaceful or quiet, and calm right
down in a situation that once would have upset them. The situation
is the same, but the persons response to the situation
has changed giving them control over their responses.
Take control of the present, the future and your life.
