What is Hypnotherapy?

"Hypnosis is the skill of using words in a particular way to achieve a specific outcome."

It has been called many things; guided imagery, imagination, an altered state of consciousness, visualization, meditation but the best way to understand what hypnosis is and how it works is to gain a clearer understanding of how the human mind develops.

Let’s start with the baby.
The baby’s mind is completely unconscious and absorbs everything experienced just the way a sponge absorbs water. A baby cannot analyze, use logic or reason, it accepts what is experienced as truth.

Somewhere between the ages of 8 and 12 years of age a child begins to develop critical mind, which acts like a filter and the child begins to question more rather than just accepting.

The child becomes an adult and critical mind is fully developed but even then, there are many things in life that may overwhelm us and overload Critical Mind. Things like health problems, breakup of a relationship, physical or emotional trauma or “just” the everyday things.

All of the information sent to the brain by the environment, the physical body, and the conscious and unconscious mind is called message units.

When Critical Mind is overloaded with information (message units) and has reached its saturation point, we feel overwhelmed and it is during those times that all our insecurities begin to surface.

When we become overwhelmed we no longer function well and our insecurities begin to overload our logic and reason and it may become difficult to think clearly

Our body begins to feel the effect of all those message units and then:

  • The sympathetic nervous system is stimulated.
  • You may have difficulty coping with pressures.
  • Your body may begin to tighten up.
  • The unconscious mind prepares for fight or flight.
  • Your heart may beats faster.
  • Your blood pressure may rise.
  • Your conscious mind can no longer handle input entering the brain and it becomes difficult to think clearly.

Sound familiar?

At that point you are in Environmental Hypnosis, which is a very hypersuggestible state.

By now, you are probably recalling all the times you have experienced Environmental Hypnosis in your everyday life without realizing that you were in a hyper-suggestible state because it is such a natural state.

Remember times when you:

  • Were caught up in what you were thinking so that you didn’t hear someone call your name?
  • You imagined or visualized something to the point that you became so focused on it that you were able to ignore other conversations around you?
  • You saw a commercial on television advertising that snack food you love and suddenly you crave that food.
  • You were driving your car and deep in thought about something when you suddenly realize you reached your destination but you don’t remember turning that corner, or how you got there so quickly. You’re conscious mind was deep in thought and your unconscious mind took over. You were in an altered state or environmental hypnosis. Some refer to it as road hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that you slip in and out of in your daily life.

There are two ways that we enter the state of hypnosis.

1. When we become very anxious or there is an overload of message units, we automatically slip into environmental hypnosis.

2. We enter a positive state of hypnosis in a controlled environment, guided by a professional hypnotherapist or when we intentionally practice self-hypnosis, meditation or guided imagery.

Hypnotherapy is a natural, powerful, and may effectively help prevent many other problems that could occur in the future.
